In 2014 the City of Peterborough announced the $8.5M urban park development of the downtown core’s Louis St. parking lot. Word began to travel quickly prompting developers to bid on the project. Numerous attractive concepts filtered through for the city’s consideration, but unfortunately they all fell through, one after the other, over the 2 years that followed.
As a project manager at Birchbark I am charged with some amazingly creative and challenging projects, but having the opportunity to help develop a project of this scope would be a dream come. On January 6th, 2016 that opportunity walked through our front door. He introduced himself as “G.W. Scarsdale of Scarsdale Enterprises”.
G.W. had relocated to Peterborough from Sweet Water Texas a few years back but hadn’t yet fully developed his idea for the urban park, until now. He continued by saying that Birchbark’s reputation as THE creative media company, preceded us, and that he only wanted our team to help him bring his “fantastical oasis” to a reality. Affectionately called “Ptbo Land” G.W. promised something amazing we would be proud to be a part of. His passion was infectious – we couldn’t wait to get started.
Over the next month we worked closely with G.W. to design his vision. With $62M to personally fund his urban park dream, G.W. has spared no expense in the development and construction of Ptbo Land. In his own words, G.W. he just wants to “give back to the community that has given him so much” since his arrival.
Armed with a healthy list of ideas and even more determination, G.W. entered each phase of the project’s development with a “never say die” approach – Jumping over hurdles and slicing through the City’s red tape as fast as it would go up.
Working along side G.W. and the Scarsdale Enterprises team definitely had it’s challenges, but at Birchbark we pride ourselves on being able to rise to any challenge, meet any goal, and give 150% to each and every project we take on.
In the words of our founder Scott Adams “Mr. Scarsdale knew what he wanted, we just helped him get there using all the skills in our arsenal”
The completed “Ptbo Land” theme park design seen above, will hopefully be reviewed by the city. If selected, you could be riding a butter tart, lift lock dropping, and experiencing the magic of Splashtasia, as early as summer 2018.
