Trent University Virtual Reality Recruitment Campaign

How we created an immersive virtual reality (360) video presentation to recruitment students and make an impact at a consumer event

The Need

Trent University was in need of an immersive virtual reality (360) video presentation for the recruitment of prospective students. The video needed to showcase the diversity of their program offering in addition to the beauty of their Peterborough and Durham campuses, while also serving to depict their unique culture, of which they are so proud. This 360 video would need to be relatively short (under two minutes running time) and yet be comprehensive and impactful, allowing Trent to maximize the number of those who could experience the VR presentation in a university recruitment fair setting. Trent University was also in need of a viable virtual reality hardware solution, along with initial hardware setup and VR technology training sessions for their team. We would also need to ensure that the video could be available for download and/or streaming via the Trent University website.

The Solution and Results

We met with Trent University’s internal communication team for an initial production meeting, ensuring that any and all 360 video captured for the project would be consistent within the context of their existing brand positioning and marketing/communications strategy. A comprehensive shotlist was developed, in addition to a coordinated shooting schedule (spanning several months). Each individual shot was staged and choreographed for maximum impact, as total running time was limited. Each shot needed to allow for the viewer to be able to get a real sense of their surroundings, while the video propelled them seamlessly from one facet of campus life to the next. The final production served in presenting a diverse and well-rounded, compelling depiction of Trent University’s campus life.

Trent University also provided us with a working budget for hardware procurement. It had to be a relatively cost-effective, mobile solution that their recruitment team could manage and troubleshoot on the fly, when necessary. We procured for them five Oculus Rifts along with five Alienware laptops that met the robust technical requirements necessary for prolonged use of virtual reality technology. We trained the recruitment team and accompanied them to their first large-scale university fair (OUF), ensuring that the initial rollout of the presentation was a success. We also exported a version of the 360 video and uploaded it to their YouTube channel for embedding within their website.

The final VR presentation was met with great enthusiasm among university fair attendees and was embraced by the communications team for all future recruitment initiatives, as it exceeded their expectations.
